Skin Care with Essential Oils

Essential oils for the skin

The skin is the largest organ in our body and its surface can reach up to 200 cm2 with a thickness varying between 0.5 mm on the eyelids and 4 mm on the sole of the foot.

It is made up of three different layers: the epidermis, which is the most superficial and is where dead cells are found; the dermis, which is highly vascularized, rich in elastin and collagen and where the sweat glands, hair follicles and sebaceous glands pass; the hypodermis, which is the deepest layer and is rich in fat cells, nerve endings and vessels and acts as a deposit of vitamins and hormones.

The skin has several physiological functions:

  • Acts as a protective barrier against bacteria, pollutants and radiation
  • Protects internal organs from impacts and friction
  • Promotes the transmission of nerve and sensory signals
  • Counteracts fluid loss and regulates body temperature
  • It is able to transmit a series of messages and emotions, thanks to its color, scent and consistency. It connects our organism with the outside world.
  • It is one of the major excretory organs and exchange organ

The skin reflects our general state of health and is often subject to common problems such as: Sensitive skin, Reactive skin, Atopic dermatitis, pimples, blackheads, cysts, hyperpigmentation, dryness and dehydration.

The skin's absorption capacity varies depending on the size of the skin surface, its thickness, the presence of lesions and wounds and the degree of hydration.

The essential oils They are extremely volatile and lipophilic odorous molecules with a very low molecular weight and these characteristics mean that they use the sebaceous glands to overcome the skin barrier and enter the underlying layers until they reach the blood capillaries through which they then begin their journey inside the organism.

The speed of absorption through the skin varies from 20 minutes for essential oils such as thyme and eucalyptus, up to 60-80 minutes for cinnamon. According to P. Rovesti, citrus essential oils are absorbed in times ranging from 10 to 30 minutes in the presence of massage.

They have a high transcutaneous penetration power.
This property can be exploited:

  • to act on the deep organs underlying the point of application;
  • to convey other active substances (alkaloids, glucosides, etc.);
  • to have systemic effects.

In fact, once the skin barrier is overcome, the essential oil spreads by diffusion in the extracellular fluids, to reach the blood and lymph. With humoral transport they finally reach the tissues and the various organs, which retain the essential oils in relation to their own tropism.

We can therefore use the skin as a real gateway.

All essential oils are suitable for application to the skin but it is always better to dilute them also because vegetable oils facilitate their transport. The more active the oil, the more important the dilution. There are also oils that are dermocaustic such as cinnamon bark, the thyme, the oregano, or highly sensitizing ones such as lemongrass, verbena and lemon balm. In these cases it is advisable to maintain a low concentration of essential oils.
